I went to several games at Marseille during the '98 World Cup.
Great place. Edgy, yes, but I don't like sterile cities.
The old velodrome was huge and mostly un-roofed, but the atmosphere was still decent. I'm told it has improved significantly with the new roof on all sides.
As mentioned by others, Marseille train station is fucking nuts. For one match (I think it was Brazil v Norway), we turned up mob handed and there was no accommodation in the city. I think the authorities told us that because we were English and our lot had not long trashed the place in the build-up to the Tunisia match.
So, without anywhere to sleep after the match, we ended up crashing on the floor in the station. There were scores of us from all over the world - and the police kept us under armed guard. But it wasn't to 'control' English fans - it was for our own safety inside the station!
I got woken up the following morning when one of the massive police sniffer dogs was rifling through my gear. Soon made an exit..!
Mental city. Love it.

Manuel, I have been to many large stations in other countries in Europe and no others had the 'atmosphere' of Marseille. Go there and hang around at night for a few hours to see what I mean, loads more wrong uns there than anywhere else.

Sounds like an interesting place, it’s always had a reputation for lawlessness. I once met a Muslim girl from Marseille who was wild in bed, I fancy taking that train journey to see if I can meet another one like her, inshallah

Follow the 'road to the sun' and when you get to Marseilles, you see the kharzi from miles back so won't miss it, hook a right or left, wonderful either way, just don't stop
Sage advice from years back and employed repeatedly, give the place a swerve, ghastly horrible place full of wronguns despised by the whole of France

Was there about 12 years ago working on a police tour. On a night off we asked a local where to go for a drink.
“Anywhere, but don’t go more than three blocks from the stadium.

I got the train down from Calais to Marseille, by memory changed once. Was about 6 hours I think.

Its a good train journey. When i went you had to change at Lille but direct now. Busy in August though.

Watched England play Tunisia there in the 1998 World Cup. Red-hot day, great stadium, long walk from the station!
Tried to chat up Caroline Quentin while drunk and sunburnt on the way back

Chcek out the Marseille series on Netflix starring Gerard Depardieu. It is a political drama and Depardieu plays the role of Mayor.
There are lots of footage of both the city and the Orange Velodrome. Some of the scenes were shot pitch side. What a stadium.

I was there in 2002 when Inter Railing around Europe. I did not get robbed but I remember the Port area near the main station had an air of intimidation around nightfall with some menacing North Africa types congregating.

Been a couple of times for holidays. Absolutely love it. The old Port area is lovely and has a fascinating history. You can get the train direct from St Pancras now as well. I didnt get robbed either!

Was there for the England v Tunisia game in France 98. Don't remember much about the game but it was going right off down at the port.

A fabulous venue in a fabulous city. Easy to get to and back from the Old Port or beach. Creates an electric atmosphere whether for football or rugby. Sightlines are great and fans are the best in France.
I've been there before and after the roof went on and honestly couldn't say which created a better atmosphere.
Once we can travel again head over for a long weekend and pop into Brasserie l'OM on the quayside, a place where I told the owner he had too many photos of Didier Drogba on the wall and not enough of Andre Ayew. I may have had a pastis or two in me by then.
